Water household use
Do I know how much water we use or do I know if we use it economical. I know we don’t spoil, but is it true? The
family consisting of 2 adults and 2 adolescents. On my water bill we spend about 170 m
3
a year. That is 42,5 m
3
(42.500 liters) a person.
On the website of the waterworks the average is 47.750 liters a year per person for a household of 4 persons. So far
we do it well.
Can I find what is the use of water normally and what do we use in our family. As you can see it is 116, 44 liters per
person a day.
On the internet you will find the average use in % per object. What we see is that 45% is for the bathroom to wash
yourself. The toilet use is 31%, cleaning clothes 13% and the dishes 5%.
In the picture I show the grey water , the black water and non-reusable water . You can argue about
the choice, but it depends on how far you will go.
The gray water is
103 liter, what we can reuse. So 13 liter we can not use a
day. Per person 13 liter has to be refreshed per day. The
question is how long does it take to purify the reuse
water. And can you make drinking water of it.
Rainfall volume
How much rain is falling on the roof over a year. The average in my country is 750 mm. Our roof is 60 m
2
.
In a year it produces 45.000 liters. And one person uses 42.500 liters. In the current circumstances it is just enough
for one person.
Terminology colors water types
To go on talking about water, we are talking of a process. We start with a certain quality and during the process the
quality changes. In the present situation we only use mains water from the water works. In the future we want to use
rain water and possible use of pool water.
During the investigation two things attract my attention. First the use of warm water and second the high quality
when brushing teeth´s and using water for consumption. In the chart there are 4 main qualities to start with.
During the investigation we will see that quality depends on acidity, hardness, micro-organism and bio-chemicals.
Reuse water
In the item ‘Water household use’ I showed that roughly 89% is grey water and therefore reusable. From the 116
liters a day, you can reuse 103 liters. But it means that you have to capture both the rain water and the used water,
and filter it for reuse. But that’s what the waterworks is doing. And if you succeed, instead of one person, more
persons can use this volume of water. Theoretically if there are 8 persons using each 116 liter a day, it means that
you need to replace 928 liter (8 x 116) the same day out of the stock but also be purified.
There are two main ways to collect the rain water and use it as grey water. The first is to collect it in rain harvest
containers and the second to collect in a pool with plants (to purify).
Water pool
In my search to recycle water, I found a book who describes to turn rain water
into a good quality water. Not exactly drinking water but it is the first step and the
challenge to create drinking water on a natural basis. There are several
techniques, from small ponds with chemicals to big ones without. I will choose
without. Although you have seen that the water we use now, costs us € 340 a year.
It is not a lot but if the quality isn’t good, we have to pay it with our health and
that is much more expensive.
It begins with the requirements of the water. Then all kinds of algae and germs,
when the population is to big it brings diseases and troubled water. And then the
different types of plants against acid or alkali water to bring the balance to a pH
value of 7 (neutral).
And during reading the first chapter, which was very complex because of all the chemical and biological therms I
first had to translate and to comprehend. It crossed my mind that to pure water had to be less complicated.
Water container
In Australia is at this moment a big promotion to use a water container which catches the rain in big containers of
10.000 liter or more.
